The New Mayor Pledges a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in First Speech
On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Leader
The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.
Ignoring advice to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”
Governing with Socialist Principles
Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.
The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.
A Sweeping Blueprint
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:
- Subsidized daycare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for about 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing External Dynamics
The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.
Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.
The Basic Challenges of Governing

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.
As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
